Primary 1 and Primary 2 SOAR Programme
MTL SOAR is a reading programme designed to foster a love for reading in the student’s Mother Tongue Language. The acronym SOAR stands for “Spark interest, Open minds, Appreciate cultural heritage, and Rise as confident readers”. This programme encourage students to develop a positive attitude towards reading and learning their MTL and develop a positive set of reading dispositions and habits in the students from young. The students are meaningfully engaged through various fun and light-hearted activities to deepen their interest in the books they are reading.
These activities enhance students’ language skills and cultural understanding by exposing them to authentic language use and culturally rich stories, helping them connect with their heritage in a meaningful and enjoyable way.
Primary 2 CPES (Cultural Performance Exposure Scheme)
CPES provides Lower Primary students with immersive arts experiences beyond the classroom while supporting Malay cultural performing arts groups in Singapore. These meaningful learning experiences support Malay Language learning by exposing students to the language through interactive storytelling, music and performances in authentic cultural contexts. Through these experiences, students deepen their appreciation of Malay heritage, expand their vocabulary and strengthen their listening and communication skills in an engaging and enjoyable manner.
Students participated in activities such as an underwater-themed performance that promoted environmental awareness and teamwork, as well as Arabian-inspired storytelling sessions featuring Abu Nawas, which highlighted values such as wisdom, creativity, resilience and problem-solving. These experiences encouraged students to connect language learning with values education and real-life situations, while fostering greater interest and appreciation for the Malay language and culture.
Mother Tongue Language (MTL) Fortnight
Mother Tongue Language (MTL) Fortnight aims to create an immersive environment for learning and appreciating Mother Tongue Languages and Cultures. Students are exposed to a wide variety of activities. We hope that these activities provide authentic opportunities for students to use the Malay Language and experience its culture.
During the MTL Fortnight the students took part in meaningful activities centered on the value of sacrifice based on the theme of Hari Raya Haji. They explored how sacrifices are made for the well-being of others and discussed real-life examples that helped them understand its importance. As part of the programme, the students designed creative cards using calligraphy, incorporating core values such as kindness, responsibility and respect. These hands-on activities not only enhanced their appreciation of the language but also allowed them to express their understanding in an artistic way. The students also enjoyed the experience as they actively engaged in discussions and activities. Moreover, they gained a deeper understanding of the purpose and significance of making sacrifices.
