Primary 1 Tamil Language Students’ First Day of Tamil Class
Our Primary 1 students began their Tamil Language learning journey through engaging ice-breaker games, self-introduction activities, songs, and storytelling sessions designed to help them feel welcomed and confident in a new classroom environment. Students introduced themselves in the Tamil Language class, bonded with classmates through paired activities, and learnt classroom expectations centered on respect, active participation, and teamwork.
A meaningful highlight was the “Welcome Bear” time capsule activity, where students penned down their thoughts and feelings about their first Tamil Language lesson. The same reflection card would be returned to them in Primary 6, allowing students to reflect on their growth and learning journey in the Tamil Language over the years.
These experiences helped students develop communication, empathy and relationship-building skills through meaningful interactions and shared learning experiences, while building a positive foundation for joyful and meaningful Tamil Language learning.
Pongal Celebration – A Tamil Harvest Festival
Primary 1 to Primary 6 students celebrated Pongal through meaningful classroom activities that deepened their understanding of the Tamil harvest festival as a cultural celebration centered on gratitude, unity, appreciation for nature, and family bonding. Students also explored how Pongal transcends religion and is celebrated globally as an important cultural tradition among Tamil communities.
Primary 3 and 4 students created colourful Pongal pot weaving crafts, developing creativity, perseverance, and appreciation for traditional art forms. Primary 5 and 6 students designed Pongal postcards and reflected on how the festival is celebrated with their families, strengthening communication and self-expression skills.
Through discussions and reflections, students explored Pongal values such as thankfulness, humility and resilience, and related them meaningfully to their daily lives and interactions with others. The celebration also encouraged students to communicate, collaborate and learn from one another through meaningful shared experiences, while strengthening their appreciation for multiculturalism, heritage and cultural identity.
Mother Tongue Language Week Celebration
During the two-week Mother Tongue Language Week celebration, Primary 1 to Primary 6 students participated in immersive cultural workshops and hands-on activities aimed at building confidence in speaking the Tamil Language while fostering appreciation for the language and heritage beyond the classroom.
Students explored various traditional art forms and cultural practices through activities such as clay lamp painting and storytelling recordings (P1–P2), flower garland tying (P3), henna coaster making and Rangoli Kolam activities (P4), lotus leaf mural creation (P5), and thoranam tying with video presentations on its origins and significance (P6).
These experiences provided students with meaningful opportunities to communicate, collaborate and learn together in enjoyable and engaging ways. Through authentic and hands-on learning experiences, students deepened their appreciation and understanding of their culture, traditions and Tamil Language while building confidence, strengthening friendships and developing a stronger sense of connection to their mother tongue.
